Gambling and the Young People
Although gambling and the problems that come with it are more identified with the adults, studies show that more and more young people are becoming addicted or are experiencing problems which are gambling related.People, as young as high school students play gambling for money. A fraction of young adults who play gambling encounter problems, and some even become addicted to gambling. To be able to solve this problem, we must first trace how young people begin their career in gambling.
Some young adults pick up gambling from their parents, who are also gambling enthusiasts. Some of these parents take them to gambling events, such as bingo social, which seem innocent and harmless at first, since these kids are accompanied by their parents. What parents do not know is that these kids begin to develop interest in gambling as well. This is because kids like to imitate adults, especially their parents, because they want to be treated as adults. For them, gambling becomes a sign of maturity.
These kids find themselves engaging more and more in some serious gambling games. They find it enjoyable, and exciting, plus the money is very enticing. The problem is, since they're too young, they are weaker to temptations and urges, and that is where problem gambling begins. These kids skip classes, or ditch their friends and family just to be able to gamble. It is reported that kids as young as ten show signs of problem gambling, that are similar to what you can observe in adult problem gamblers.
At present, statistics tell us that there are more boys who suffer in problem gambling than there are girls, but the number of girl problem gamblers is greatly increasing each day. That means both your daughters and sons are at great risk. Although it is fun to be gambling with your friends and family, problem gamblers quickly find it to be boring that's why they shift quickly to higher stakes gambling.
What is the moral of the story? Be careful what you show your kids. You may not know it, but they copy your actions because they look up to you. Some times you unknowingly teach them things, like when you take them to gambling houses. It is fine to expose your kids to many things, but be sure to be there when they want to explore more to guide them until they are ready. Gambling is a big thing, and if not monitored properly, kids can develop problem gambling.
